Health Alert – Bolivian Healthcare System Severely Strained Due to Spike in COVID-19 Infections

Location: Nationwide

Event: Medical facilities throughout Bolivia are experiencing difficulty coping with a sudden rise in COVID-19 infections, leading to serious deficiencies in medical care throughout the country. The current availability of urgent and routine medical care at hospitals in large cities is inadequate. Medical care in rural communities is also limited. Shortfalls in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds, oxygen, and other medical supplies pose a risk to the health of U.S. citizens in Bolivia who find themselves ill, either from COVID-19 or from any other serious illness or injury. For these reasons, the U.S. Embassy would like to reiterate the current State Department Travel Advisory for Bolivia, which is Level 4 “Do Not Travel.”
