Event: Extension of Quarantine Measures in Bolivia Through August 31

The Bolivian government announced an extension of national quarantine measures through August 31, 2020 in order to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Departmental and municipal governments will determine commercial activity and other services and activities not governed by the national decree, and may add restrictions as needed by local conditions. U.S. Citizen travelers and residents in Bolivia should verify local COVID-19 measures at their current location or intended destination.

Under the national decree:

  • Social distancing and the use of masks in public places remains obligatory.
  • Monday to Friday: Persons and vehicles are prohibited from circulating between the nighttime hours of 18:00 and 5:00 but may circulate during the day with limits on the number of people in vehicles.
  • Saturday and Sunday: Vehicles are prohibited from circulating. People may circulate on foot within 500 meters of their home.
  • Classes and other public events remain suspended.
  • International flights remain suspended.
  • All borders remain closed.
  • Returning Bolivian citizens and residents, diplomats, members of special missions and international organizations, technical specialists, and drivers of international goods and cargo are exempt from the border closure.
  • Intermunicipal, interprovincial, and interdepartmental transportation services will be determined by the appropriate authorities according to the determined risk level.
  • Government and private offices, job sites, and services that are open must work a “continuous day” which means they will not close for lunch but instead will stop work several hours earlier in the afternoon.

American Citizen Services at U.S. Embassy La Paz and Consular Agency Santa Cruz are currently available on an emergency basis and by appointment only. Citizens seeking an emergency appointment should email providing their contact information, service needed, and the nature of their emergency.

There are no US government-operated or or funded repatriation flights to the United States currently planned. Commercial airlines operating in Bolivia have continued to run periodic special flights to Miami and other foreign destinations during Bolivian quarantine measures. Please consult Boliviana de Aviacion (BoA) and Amaszonas airlines for options. U.S. Embassy La Paz cannot provide transportation from home to airport on the day of these flights, and does not control luggage or pet restrictions for these flights or any onward travel. Passengers may be subject to additional quarantine restrictions and/or health screenings upon arrival and should inquire with the airlines or local authorities at their destination.

In response to significant worldwide challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of State has temporarily suspended routine visa services at all U.S. Embassies and Consulates.
